How to Layer Paint and Sand for an Aged Wood Finish

Want that soft, aged, farmhouse look? Here’s an easy way to distress your piece.

Start by painting your surface with a solid coat of white paint and let it dry completely. Once it’s dry, take a piece of fine-grit sandpaper and lightly sand along the edges, corners, and any raised details. Focus on areas that would naturally get worn over time. This removes just enough paint to give it that authentic, timeworn look.

For even more depth, stain the wood first — or paint it a darker color — and let that dry. Then apply your white paint over the top. When you sand the edges, the stain or original color underneath will show through, creating beautiful contrast and a layered, aged finish.

Simple, easy, and perfect for adding character to scrap wood, frames, signs, and decoupage projects.
